George Washington Carver Recognition Day in The United States of America

Today in History Africa 5 January

Today is George Washington Carver Recognition Day, it is one of the only days set aside by Americans to commemorate a black person. Every year, on the 5 January Americans have the chance to recognize all that George Washington Carver has done for their country and the world.

George Washington Carver was born into slavery, and though he experienced a rough childhood, he was given the opportunity to pursue an education. He became the first African American to earn a Bachelor of Science degree.

Dr. Carver was an agricultural and food scientist appointed by the then President Roosevelt to address the southern farming crisis, which he did resolve, saving the United States from starvation during World War II. He was later awarded the Roosevelt Medal and upon his death his home was made a historical site. The date of his passing, 5 January 1943, is the date the USA chose to commemorate George Washington Carver.
