Constitution Day in Ghana

Today in History Africa 7 January

Today is Constitution Day in The Republic of Ghana, it is a statutory public holiday. Observed for the first time 3 years ago in 2019 this holiday is celebrated annually on the 7 January. On this day, 7 January 1993 Ghana the 1992 Constitution came into effect making Ghana a Fourth Republic. Today is a day Ghana’s work to maintain the fourth republic is acknowledged throughout the nation.

W.B. Purvis patented the fountain pen

On this day, 7 January 1890, William B. Purvis was awarded a patent for his improvements on the fountain pen. Before then, writing with a fountain pen required the ink to be carried in a separate container; Purvis’ design of the fountain pen included the ink stored inside the pen.

“The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive construction of a fountain pen adapted to general use and which may be carried in the pocket.”

Ever since William B. Purvis’ invention of the fountain pen the process of writing has become neater, cheaper and all the more interesting! Innovators like William B Purvis, who when challenged with a problem come up with a solution are what advance the world to a better place.
