Democracy Day in Cape Verde

Today in History Africa 13 January

Today is Democracy Day in Cape Verde. It has been placed as a public holiday in the country and is celebrated every year on the 13 January to commemorate the Republic’s first democratic elections.

On this day, 13 January 1991, The new Republic of Cape Verde held its first democratic elections. At the time the island nation had been governed by the same political party ever since its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Movement for Democracy (MPD), the official opposition party, was formed in 1990 and a year later Cape Verde first multi-party election took place (on 13 January). The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde were defeated by the MPD and António Mascarenhas Monteiro became the first democratically elected president of Cape Verde.

First Black person to play in an NBA All-Star Game

On this day, 13 January 1953, Donald Argee Barksdale became the first African-American person to play at an National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game. The professional basketball player broke many more barriers for black people in and outside the basketball court. As one of the first African-American player in the NBA he played for the Baltimore Bullets and Boston Celtics. Barksdale was also the first black radio disc jockey, beer distributor and television host in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA. Don Barksdale pioneered in many other fields and received many awards for his good works. Most importantly, Donald Argee Barksdale left a last legacy, inspiring all until this day.
