Today, 25 January 2023, is Revolution day in the country of Egypt. It is a public holiday celebrated each year on 25 January, the anniversary of the start of the 2011 Egyptian revolution.

On this day, 25 January 2011, The 2011 Egyptian revolution, or The 25 January revolution started.

The date the revolution begun on 25 January, and fell Police Day, a national holiday of the time. In Egypt Police Day was meant to commemorate police officers for their efforts during the 23 July Revolution in 1952 which eventually lead to Egypt’s independence from Britain. Egyptians chose that date in protest to the increasing police brutality.

Throughout the country millions of Egyptians protested against The Mubarak regime. President Hosni Mubarak’s authoritarian government had been accused of corruption, electoral fraud and political censorship and repression. Egypt had been under state-of-emergency laws for 31 years. And Egyptians complained of low wages as unemployment numbers and food prices kept rising.

In total, The 25 January revolution went on for 18 days. On 11 February Hosni Mubarak, who had been in power since 1981, resigned from office as the republic’s 4th president. The constitution was suspended as the the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces governed Egypt for 6 months until democratic elections took place and national power was transferred from SCAF to civilian council.

Though not all of their demands were met Egyptians achieved to accomplish their main goal: to remove President Hosni Mubarak from office. Soon the nationwide curfew ended and 4 years later new minimum and maximum wages were put into place. In all, most of the Egyptians demands were met and the country became democratic but it is important to remember that The 2011 Egyptian revolution cost the lives of over 1000 people.
