Today in History Africa 27 January

On this day, 27 January 1960, the song “Indépendance Cha Cha” was released.

The hit song was composed by Le Grand Kallé during the Belgo-Congolese Round Table Conference on 20 January 1960. “Indépendance Cha Cha” is a song that celebrates the independence of the Democratic Republic of Congo from Belgium.

“Indépendance Cha Cha” was written in both Lingala and French, the most widely spoken languages in Congo. And played in the style known as Congolese or African Rumba. The songs lyrics emphasized the significance of unity in Congo as it is what led the country to independence and freedom from colonialism. Also mentioned in the songs lyrics are the names of major Pan-African Congolese political factions as well as politicians such as the first president and prime minister of the DRC, Joseph Kasa-Vubu and Patrice Lumumba.

“Indépendance Cha Cha” refrain:

Indépendance cha-cha, tozoui e
Oh! Kimpwanza cha-cha, tubakidi
Oh! Table Ronde cha-cha, ba gagné o
Oh! Dipanda cha-cha tozoui e.

In January 1960, Le Grand Kallé and L’African Jazz accompanied the Congolese delegation to the Belgo-Congolese Round Table Conference in Brussels.

“Indépendance Cha Cha” was first played on 27 January 1960 at the Hotel Plaza. And it was performed by Le Grand Kallé and his band L’African Jazz, whose members were Nico Kasanda, Déchaud Mwamba, Roger Izeidi, Pierre Yatula, Armando Brazzos and Victor Longomba.

“Indépendance Cha Cha” was one of the first Pan-African hits.

The song expertly reflected the pro-independence movement and climate found all over Africa. It was broadcasted across Africa and gained great popularity especially in the francophone African states.

During, the Round Table Conference, the members of L’African Jazz also produced the songs “Table Ronde” and “Vive Patrice Lumumba”
