Today, 1 February 2023, is National Heroes’ Day in Rwanda. It is a public holiday in the country and is held annually on 1 February. In Rwanda, National Heroes’ Day is a day to commemorate patriotic men and women who have sacrificed so much for the good of Rwanda and its citizens.

Every year, the president, government officials and families to Heroes’ participate in the laying of wreaths done at the Heroes Cemetery in Remera, Kigali. Also, on National Heroes’ Day, Rwandese leaders, among others, pay their respects to the national martyrs found at the National Heroes’ Mausoleum.

National Heroes’ Day in Rwanda is a day to pay tribute to all of Rwandas heroes’ and martyrs, throughout its history. Among the heroes commemorated on this date are the victims of the Rwandan genocide.

Rwandese national heroes are classified in three categories: Imanzi, Imena and Ingezi. 

The Imanzi is the supreme Hero. In this category is the Unknown Soldier (whose tomb is found National Heroes’ Mausoleum) and Major General Fred Rwigema of the armed military struggle of 1990. The Imena are heroes known for their extraordinary acts. Among the Imena are: Félicité Niyitegeka (pictured above); Agathe Uwilingiyimana, the first woman to hold the position of Prime Minister; and the 6 students of the Nyange Secondary School who bravely sacrificed their lives to save their peers. The third category is the Ingezi. The Ingezi are heroes, that are still alive and that are known for their good ideas or outstanding achievements.
