Today, 2 February 2023, is Unity Day in Burundi; it is a public holiday celebrated every year on 5 February in the Republic of Burundi. Unity Day is meant to unify the nation of Burundi through peaceful action.

National Unity Day was introduced by Pierre Buyoya who was the second president of Burundi, ever since the deposition of Colonel Jean-Baptiste Bagaza’s in 1987. Unity Day along with the Charter of National Unity were a part of the late president Buyoya’s plan for a united Burundi. The Charter of National Unity was created to further develop Burundi and to put an end to ethnic discrimination in the nation. Through a referendum the charter was approved in 1991 by 89.77% of voters with a 96% turnout and it was put into effect in 1992.

Soon after, President Buyoya declared 5 February as National Unity Day in an attempt to reconcile the Tutsi and Hutu ethnic groups.

At the time, Burundi was a warring nation. The country had recently gained its independence from Belgium’s brutal rule. And there was a terrifying surge in ethnic based conflict, mainly between the Tutsis and the Hutus.

Not long after the adoption of new constitution Burundi tragically broke into civil war; all of Burundi suffered. The newly-elected president, Melchior Ndadaye, was assassinated. And the Tutsi genocide ensued a year later in 1994.

Since then, ethnic tensions have significantly reduced in Burundi. It is by continuing peaceful action against ethnic hatred – such as the formation of the constitution and the Ndi Umunyarwanda campaign of neighbouring Rwanda – that Burundi will truly become a united nation.
