World Wetlands Day

Today in History Africa 2 February

Today, 2 February 2023, is World Wetlands day. World Wetlands Day is part of the United Nations International Days and Weeks. It is celebrated annually on 2 February. The theme for World Wetlands Day 2023 is Wetland Restoration.

World Wetlands Day was established as a UN International Day 3 years ago, on 30 August 2021 upon a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly. And the date chosen for World Wetlands Day falls on the date of the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands.

World Wetlands Day is a day to raise awareness about wetlands by informing people on these critically important ecosystems. Because the planet is losing wetlands (3 times faster than forests) and they keep degrading. “Yet, wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies and more.”

By raising awareness of the degradation of wetlands around the world, a recuperation of lost wetlands can be done if effective change happens.
