On this day, 14 February 1953, the National Museum of Mali was opened.

The National Museum of Mali, or le Musée national du Mali is a museum located in Mali’s capital of Bamako. It hosts permanent as well as temporary exhibits with a main focus of Mali history and culture. In the museum Malian musical instruments, dress and ritual objects, among many other artefacts, are presented in the museum.

The concrete models the mosques of Djenné and Timbuktu and of several other cultural landmarks are exhibited on the exterior grounds of the National Museum of Mali.

The National Museum of Mali was opened seven years before Mali’s independence from French colonial rule. The museum has been in operation ever since and as of recently, in 1996, the museums funding increased considerably thanks to the former archeologist and later president of Mali: Alpha Oumar Konaré.

The National Museum of Mali is one of the best museum of West Africa. The archaeological and anthropological museum of African art is a leading museum with the objectives of promoting national unity and celebrating Malian traditional culture.
