African Historical Events

The Yekatit monument opens

On this day, 19 February 1955, the Yekatit 12 monument was opened in Addis Ababa.

The monument was erected in memory of the victims of the Yekatit 12 massacre that happened on 19 February 1937. And the Yekatit monument has been dedicated to the Ethiopian victims of Italian fascism.

The Yekatit monument is located in the Yekatit Square, or the Sidist Kilo Square of Ethiopia’s capital city.

The First Pan-African Congress Meeting opens

On this day, 19 February 1919, the first session of the Pan-African Congress opened in Paris, France.

The Pan-African Congress of 1919 was organized by both W.E.B. Du Bois and Ida Gibbs Hunt. In attendance were over 50 delegates of 15 countries. The governments of Britain and of the United States of America prevented many more from participating in the Pan-African Congress by preventing the delegates the right to a passport.

Principally, during the Pan-African Congress, the delegates convened to petition the ongoing Versailles Peace Conference and work towards the self-determination of African states.

 

Benin retrieves stolen art from France

On this day, 19 February 2022, France returned Beninese artefacts back to Benin.

The works of art were displayed in an exhibition one being opened by the Patrice Talon, the president of the Republic of Benin.
