The First western institution of higher Learning in Sub-Saharan Africa

Old Fourah Bay College

On this day, 18 February 1827, the Fourah Bay College, the first institution of higher learning in sub-Saharan Africa was opened in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The Fourah Bay College was the first western-oriented institution in sub-Saharan Africa. The Old Fourah Bay College is the reason Western education traversed the continent of Africa at the speed it did.

In 1955, The Original Fourah Bay College building was proclaimed a national Monument in Sierra Leone

Now the institution is a state funded college in Freetown. It was associated with Durham University for 91 years before becoming a constituent school of the University of Sierra Leone.

INDEPENDENCE OF GAMBIA

On this day, 18 February 1965, The Gambia gained its independence from Britain’s colonial rule.
