Today, 16 February 2023, is Archbishop Janani Luwum Memorial Day in Uganda. It is a public holiday in Uganda celebrated every year on 16 February.

Archbishop Janani Luwum Memorial Day commemorating the life and service of the former archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda. This holiday has been celebrated in the country since 2016.

In 1974, Janani Hanani was appointed as the third Archbishop of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Boga-Zaire. He quickly became reputed for his criticism of the dictatorial regime of the time. And in 1977, a note was delivered to Idi Amin, the president of Uganda (1971-1979), from the Archbishop Janani Luwum. The letter was written in protest of Idi Amin’s negligence in the regard to the life and safety of Ugandans, notably those of Christian faith. Luwum wrote, “Too much power has been given to members of state research to arrest and kill at will innocent individuals”.

The entire letter: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1977/02/22/letter-of-ugandan-bishops-to-idi-amin/fc88689a-8ae6-4c9e-9910-c16d616f564b/

On this day, 16 February 1977, the Archbishop Janani Hanani fell victim to Idi Amin’s tyranny. Following his letter to the president the Archbishop murdered. Accused and arrested on account of treason and plotting a coup, the Archbishop Janani Luwum and two cabinet ministers were shot dead; and it said that the crime was done on the command of Idi Amin.

“He spoke the truth, walked the truth and died for the truth”

– the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali

Ulijua?

Did you know that the two oldest mathematical instruments in the world were found in Africa!?

The Ishango Bone of the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo dates back to 20,000 years!

The Lebombo Bone of present-day South Africa and Eswatini dates back to 40,000 years!

Presently, the Ishango Bone is found in a Belgian museum. The Democratic Republic of Congo suffered under Belgium’s and King Leopold’s draconian rule many years before achieving independence in 1960. In 2023, Belgium is still in possession of original Congolese property.
