On this day, 27 February 1833, Maria W. Stewart became the first known woman to address a mixed audience of black and white women and men in America.
On that day Maria W. Stewart delivered a speech: African Rights and Liberty. She addressed a diverse audience at the AMS in Boston, USA. And critiqued many of the faults and problems present in the United States, notably, a lack of “ambition and requisite courage” on the part of the black man in the fight for the true freedom of the black race.
Like King Solomon, who put neither nail nor hammer to the temple, yet received the praise; so also have the white Americans gained themselves a name, like the names of the great men that are in the earth, while in reality we have been their principal foundation and support.
