Invention of the  Electret Microphone by James E. West

Today in History Africa 14 January

On this day, 14 January 1964, James E. West patented the Electret Microphone he co-invented with Gerhard Sessler and Murray Hill. The three men worked at Bell Laboratories when they invented the electret microphone. The electret microphone (U.S. Patent No. 3,118,022)  was a grand success: in addition to its great effectiveness and cokmpact and easy to carry size it was affordable, reliable and accurate.

Even now, the electret microphone is used every day by all walks of life.

James West is an accomplished inventor having patented many more of his own inventions and received multiple awards and distinctions for his good works. West is an inspiration to all especially students of African descent in the incredible world of science.
