The First Artist Awarded with the Spingarn Medal

Jacob A. Lawrence – 1941

On this day, 17 March 1970, Jacob Amrstead Lawrence was awarded with the Spingarn Medal by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Lawrence was the first artist to receive the Spingarn Medal.

The improvement of the street sweeper by Charles Brooks

On this day, 17 March 1896, Charles Brook patented his improvement of the street sweeper. His invention was the first self-propelled street sweeping truck.
