BK Arena broke ground in Kigali, Rwanda

Today in History Africa 19 January

On this day, 19 January 2019, the official start of the construction of The BK Arena commenced as it “broke ground”.

The BK Arena, or the Bank of Kigali Arena, is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. It is also the largest indoor arena in East Africa. The arena mainly host sport matches, of basketball and volleyball, and music concerts of mainstream Afrobeats and Amapiano musicians. The arena also host other events such as corporate conferences.

The $104 Million arena’s construction ended soon after it “broke ground”. The arena can hold up to 10,000 persons. The BK Arena was inaugurated the 9 August 2019.

The BK arena is known to have hosted many important cultural events. In 2021, the arena played host to the inaugural edition of the Basketball Africa League, or BAL, as well as the Afrobasket Championship.
