Toussaint lOuverture invaded Santiago

Today in History Africa 22 January

On this day, 22 January 1801, Toussaint L’Ouverture successfully took control of the Spanish colony of Santiago.

Once in control of the entire island of Hispaniola, Toussaint Louverture completely abolished slavery and instated a new constitution. Through Toussaint Louverture’s new constitution he was made Governor-General for Life. His takeover and new title greatly upset the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte who, a year later, retaliated by sending over 20,000 troops to invade Louverture nation.

Napoleon Bonapartes brother-in law, the General Charles Leclerc led the unexpectedly strong attack on Louverture. Months into France’s invasion of the territory Toussaint Louverture surrendered under the condition that slavery would not be reinstated in the colony. Though France regained control of the colony the possibility that Toussaint Louverture could lead another revolt on the island incited fear in Napoleon Bonaparte.

Weeks after Toussaint Louverture’s surrender to France, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered for his arrest. Louverture was captured by the French officials who had, under false pretences, invited Louverture for a parley. He was later deported to France where after months of interrogations jailed at Fort-de-Joux Toussaint Louverture died.

The Haitian Revolution Toussaint Louverture led continued until the Haiti gained its independence from European powers in 1804.
