The Rights of Colored Citizen in Travelling by Charles Lenox Remond

On this day, 25 February 1842, Charles Lenox Remond delivered his speech, “The Rights of Colored Citizen in Travelling to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. His speech was on the discrimination black people face in public transportation in the United States.

Charles Lenox Remond, a free black man delivered his speech to a white audience 23 and 19 years before the nominal abolition of slavery and the American Civil War, respectively. Charles Lenox remon was one the very first black people give testimony before a state legislature in the United States of America.
